For these types we compared the Census count with local listings before publishing.

How we know this

Read the full method and the audit log

The method, in plain words

We count businesses in Seminole County and in the 60 U.S. counties most like it in size and household income. For each business type we show how many Seminole County has, how many a typical similar county has at its size, and the range the middle half of similar counties fall in. A type is marked fewer when Seminole County is below that range by at least 2 businesses and at least a quarter of the typical count. It is marked more when it is above the range by the same margin.

Small counts. The Census does not publish a business type in a county when it has fewer than 3 establishments. We show those as “under 3” or as a range, never as zero, and we never mark a type fewer when its count is hidden: it shows as a range and is left "not rated." A type is marked more only when even the low end of its range is above the middle half of similar counties.

How to use it. A gap shows where to look first. Confirm demand on your own street before you sign a lease: a county can have fewer shops because people shop in the next county, and more because it serves its neighbors.

What is counted

Businesses with employees come from County Business Patterns 2023. For cleaning services, lawn care and landscaping, photographers, hair salons, barbers, child care, auto repair, caterers and food trucks, coffee shops, laundries and pet grooming we add one-person businesses from Nonemployer Statistics 2023. For the other types the Census publishes one-person counts only in broad groups, so those use businesses with employees only, for Seminole County and its peers alike. A store inside a bigger store is counted under the bigger store. Counts are for the county, not any one town.

The 60 similar counties

Closeness is measured by population and median household income, equally weighted, in logarithms. Connecticut and Puerto Rico are left out because the Census defines their counties differently across files.
